Yeah, even though we've done this so long, you just have like this little mode. I feel like a little nervous. Just really it's like oh here they come.
Alright good hello welcome. Welcome to Presidents Day on line. An in person on my campus today and we're also doing in person tours but glad you could be joining us this morning. We're going to maybe did 3045 seconds to make sure everyone who wants to be in the presentation is able to sign on this morning. It is 10:00 AM here in Ohio and I do know we have some out of Staters with us and even some international students so I don't know how.
Earlier late it is where you are, but this is our very first virtual presentation that's kicking off our Presidents Day weekend. My name is Brandy, bar height and I am the director of Enrollment communications in the Office of Admissions. Welcome, I'm going to be the lead moderator today for this Bishu residence Life info session. The one where they live on campus, so we're leaning into that Netflix streaming theme so had a little.
Fine with that title for our friends fans who are with us today. Anyone watching friends? Who's your favorite character? Funny thing is, is friends used to be my show back in the 90s when I was growing up and now it's being rediscovered? So welcome again to everybody. I'm going to turn this over in one minute to Josh Maxwell, our associate Director of Housing. He's right there in that nice orange tie. As you can see, we have a chat.

Good morning and welcome! I'm Brittany and I work in the housing department in the Office of Residence Life. I'm excited to hang out this morning and answer your questions!
You're able to ask questions during the presentation, so I'm going to have our other moderators who are off camera, say hello. So during Josh is 30 minute presentation, feel free to drop in your questions, will answer some of them, but we might save some of them to the end when I come back on camera to ask Josh maybe to review some of the more popular questions, or where there might be a little confusion. Sometimes called questions might be a little complicated. We'll have to take that offline or maybe talk to you about that individually, but we'll do our best this morning.

Hi Everyone! This is Austin from the Office of Admissions. I am excited you all are joining us this weekend. Let me know how I can help!
To give you an overview of what it's like to live on campus, how to make that housing payment, and how ultimately living on campus is one of the true works of BG issue. We're a residential campus. People love that we are their home away from home. So I'm going to turn it over to Josh and I will see you at the end of the presentation, but will be behind the scenes answering all your questions.

Welcome to our very first Virtual Presidents' Day - NOW STREAMING - https://www.bgsu.edu/admissions/presidents-day.html
Like Brandy said, my name is Josh Maxwell. I'm the associate director of housing in the Office of Residence Life. I'm speaking to you today from my home and laying right beside me. Potentially asleep is my dog Holmes, who usually is pretty docile. When I do these kinds of sessions, but of course he could bark if he gets really excited or see something remotely interesting. So if that happens, I'll bring them on to introduce you, but hopefully he stays quiet while we're chatting today. So my goal today is to talk to you about what it's like to live on campus and what can you can expect when it comes to living on campus so.
One of the things that I'm going to do is I'm going to talk about a lot of different things. I want to talk about one. Why do we live on campus two? What are the different halls that we have? What kind of rooms do we have? Three, what you can expect in terms of how to apply for housing? What does that process look like? And then, finally, I'm going to talk about some optional steps such as our learning communities and how to increase the chances of living with somebody that you want to live with. So those are the things that I'm going to talk to you about for the next little bit of time. So without further ado, we're just going to jump right in.
So a little bit about an overview of housing for us. So like I said before, BGSU is a residential campus, just like Brandy was mentioning. We actually have a two year live on requirement, so we require our students to live on campus for their first two years. And there's a reason why we do this. It's actually several reasons. One, we know that students are more satisfied with their college experience by coming to campus, because even if you're really engaged academically, it's also important to be engaged socially to be connected to the campus to be connected to resources.
Callie Inkrott
09:05:23 AM
To actually have that sense of belonging at the campus and living on campus is a major component of that. We know students were living in the halls, have higher GPA's, and we know that they're more likely to graduate from students who commute, so we know that by being here, you're going to do better as a student here, which again, is the reason why you're pursuing a college education. One of the things I talked about when it comes to living on campus is the idea that if BGSU is an investment in yourself and in your long-term professional and career interests.
Then living on campus is one of the best ways that you're making good on that investment. So let's talk about the holes that are on campus. So we have several different holes that are on campus. These are the ones that you'll typically for new and transfer. Students will typically live in over during their first year. That includes Centennial, Cole McDonald, Conklin Chrysler in the offenhauer towers. We will have some students who may live in Founders Hall and Founders Hall is specifically only first year students can live there. If you're in the honors learning community.
Or in all gender housing user both separate application processes. So if you're thinking about Founders, it's really only an option for you if you're in the honors learning Community or if you're in all gender housing. If you're not in either of those two, then you're going to be looking at the halls that I talked to you about on the previous slide.
Callie Inkrott
09:06:10 AM
Awesome! Here's where you can check out our residence halls online! https://www.bgsu.edu/residence-life/comparison.html
We have a couple of different room types in our halls, so first we have double rooms and single rooms. A double room is a bedroom where that two people share. There are two twin beds in it, one for each person and they share and sleep in that same room. Then we have a single room with one bed in one bedroom. It's designed for one specific individual. If you're looking in terms of how many types of beds we have on campus of each of these, but 82% of our rooms on campus are all double rooms, meaning that they are.
They're exactly the double rooms with two people in them. 18% of our rooms are single rooms and with that in majority of those rooms are held for medical accommodation. Specifically, if you have a medical accommodation through Accessibility services, we also have a bunch of different room layouts for all these rooms are all mixed and laid out together. A 73% of our rooms are in traditional style residence halls and I'm going to show you some diagrams of what these look like in a second. Traditional means that these are rooms that are all in a wing or floor together and they have a.
Community style bathrooms M 16% of our rooms are in in bathroom layouts, more like a hotel style where the bathroom is actually in the unit itself with the bedrooms themselves and then 10% are our Founders suites that we have and so I'm going to show you each of these different diagrams so you have an idea of what to expect.
So First things first is our traditional layout. So this is really about a standard single or double bedrooms with a secure access to a community bathroom that's down the hallway, so you can see here. Here's the bedroom, it's just the bedroom, nothing else, and then down the Hall you have a community style bathroom. Now what does that look like? A community style bathroom looks like this so it is secure access, so only the people who are living on the floor are in that block or group are actually able to get.
Into that into that bathroom. So even if I live on a different floor, let's say you live on the 2nd floor and you have friends on the third floor, they can't get into the bathroom on your floor. Only the people that are in that specific room or floor or wing that's allowed into that bathroom can get into that bathroom and you'll gain access to that in the same way that you gain access to the building whenever you're coming in.
Callie Inkrott
09:08:24 AM
We also have our in bathroom layouts, more like a hotel style if you will. You typically find these in Centennial Hall and in Founders Hall in single rooms. This layout is more like a hotel room. Students receive like it's the accommodations, are similar to a traditional layout in the sense that you do have the same type of furniture and layout, but there's a little bit of extra real estate to accommodate a bathroom. So you here on the left hand image you can see what looks like a typical double, but there's a little extra space to accommodate a bathroom that only those two students are using.
You can also see that for two singles that are linked by a shared a little mini entryway with a bathroom that goes into it, so that's her in bathroom layout.
And then we have our suite style layout. Again. This is for Founders Hall and this is only for first year students who are thinking about living in the honors learning community or in all gender housing. So one of these two is what you're thinking about. This may apply to you and these are suites where multiple rooms are linked together by a main living room area with then shared bathrooms, typically on either side. We also have these suites available in Falcon Heights for returning students only. So when you're thinking about your second year you could look forward to potentially living in a sweet like this if you were returning student.
So now that we finish that part, we're going to talk about how do I actually apply for housing so I know the different types of rooms that are out there. How do I actually apply and get housing so I can fill my residency requirement and get ready to come to BGSU? So the First things first is you fill out the housing application which is a shocking first step. I know what you do is you log on to my BGSU and then you click on housing and meal plan application. That's going to take you straight to the housing application you're going to keep coming back here multiple times. 'cause this will be your go to place.
For any of the housing processes, whether it's your initial housing application making your initial housing payment or ultimately selecting your room.
Callie Inkrott
09:10:18 AM
Then you're going to sign the housing and dining agreement. So this is when you're signing that agreement of saying I'm going to live on campus and these are the obligations that I'm going to meet. This is the obligation to the University is going to meet now. If you're under 18, this is really important. You're going to need to make sure that you have a parent or Guardian with you, and that's if you're under 18 right now. So if you're under 18 when you go into the application, you'll need a parent or Guardian to sign the agreement with you. It's a really easy process. What you do is you'll submit the information for that person, and then it sends them an email.
That person checked your parent or Guardian, checks their email, they click on a link they put in their information and click submit, and then they signed the agreement and then you get to keep moving on in the application. You won't be able to progress in the application until they've done their part, so you want to make sure your parent or Guardian is with you and knows what to expect. Like I said, it's a pretty easy process. One of the things I always like to keep in mind if you put your name of your Guardian as John Smith, but then your parent or Guardian goes in and they put their information and they say Jonathan Smith, that's the only area where that will cause a problem. So you want to make sure that you're putting in the same information.
Brandi Barhite
09:11:16 AM
We have had a lot of questions about what fall will look like this year - our president will address students and families tonight at 4 - join us - https://admissions.bgsu.edu/register/president
At your parent or Guardian is putting in their same information either, so it's not. Don't do John and Jonathan, or Sue and Sue's, and make sure that you're both using the same spelling variation of that name and email address and relationships, so that way it's consistent.
Then what happens after that is you're going to make your commitment to BGSU by making your $200 housing payment. Your $200 housing payment. We call it our initial housing payment. It's not a deposit because deposits you get back your initial housing payment is actually the first part of your housing bill. So if you look at the total cost for housing, you're actually paying the first $200 of that total cost annual. Do that in the housing application.
Now it's important to think I want to talk to you about payments so.
One of the things that's really important is when you pay does not influence when you get to select your housing. So our housing selection process is going to happen over the course of multiple days. Everybody will get a time and everybody will get a specific day. They get to pick, but those days and times are all fully random. It's not influenced based on the time that you make your housing payment, and we do this for a really important reason. We randomize everyones selection time to prevent students were being penalized for forces outside of their control. That may be preventing when they're able to make that payment, particularly with the past year that we've had.
I'm going through a global pandemic and so this is something that I want to make sure everybody understands. So if you're not ready to make that payment today, maybe you're ready to make it next week. That is OK. You're still going to get that randomized selection time.
Then, once you've made that commitment, you'll start to do some optional steps if you want to do them. They're not required, but I'll talk to you about what those look like in a little bit, and the first is a room selection group. If there's somebody you really wanna live with, or if it's joining a learning community, so I'll talk a little bit about what those optional steps are in a bit.
Then, once you've made your commitment, you're also going to be able to select your required meal plan. So if you're living on campus, you are required to have a meal plan, so you want to make sure that you do is you go to if you want to know what more about meal plans you can go to nyu.bgsudining.com/residence, that'll take you to the information about what meal plans are like for new students specifically, after you've picked your meal plan and housing application. If you need to change it, you can do that by going to bgsu.edu/mealplanchange.
They have a form that you can fill out and then the dining services team will work with you to be able to change your meal plan and get you set up.
Austin Flores
09:13:48 AM
Want to learn more about meal plans? Go here: https://new.bgsudining.com/residents
Then last but not least, we talked about payments earlier, right? So does does when you pay influence your selection time? No, but you do need to make sure you make your payment by no later than June 1 so you can participate in our standard room selection process to actually pick your room. So you want to make sure that you're making your commitment by June 1st, and that's what allows you to have a room selection time to actually participate in standard room selection. That's going to happen on June 7th through the 10th, so the deadline will be June 1st.
That next day on June 2nd will send you your room selection time after 3:00 PM and standard Room selection will take place on June 7th through the 10th. So those are some good dates to make sure to keep in mind in your calendar.
So now I'm going to talk to you about some optional steps, so our first optional step is a what's called a room selection group, or an RSG for short. If you hear me say that a couple of times. So if you want to be a roommate for a specific person, you need to make it official by forming a room selection group with someone, and what that is is, you're basically saying me and one other person are really wanting to live together. Can you give us the?
Team selection time. 'cause again it's all randomized. Let's say that I have a little friend here to join me for today. This is ad known by the Internet, is baby Yoda. Although he does have a name. If you watch the second season of the Mandalorian, let's say that baby Yoda and I decided we want to live together. We want to be roommates right now. The two of us are getting random selection times that could be very different. I might pick on Monday. He might pick on Thursday. That makes it very difficult to be able to actually coordinate and get into a room.
Callie Inkrott
09:15:38 AM
What an RSG does is it actually makes me and the person I want to live with have the same selection time. It's still random, but it makes it a lot easier for us to find a room together. So that's something that's really important. If you the two of you both have the same selection time, you have one of two options. Then if you're in our SG, you can either both log in at the same time. So me and baby Yoda can go in together and say we both want to live in room 101. Going to pick this room right now when we're done or what happens is, let's say, baby Yoda's busy. He's got soccer.
Practice needs to go do something I can pick for me and for him so or if I'm busy. Let's say that I have an interview for some kind of summer internship I'm going to do. Baby Yoda can go into the system and say, alright, room 101 is the one we want and I'm going to pull Josh in with me. And now the two of us were living together. So either the two of you can go in together and pick, or one of you can pick-n-pull in the other person, which is a major benefit of the RSG process.
Brandi Barhite
09:16:31 AM
Get ready to ask questions - I will be collecting them to ask Josh at the end, or drop your question in the chat now!
You can do this in the housing and meal plan application. Like I said, you're going to keep coming back to that application from multiple steps and you can do it right after you've made your housing payment. You can go in and actually form in our SG. You can do this up until June 1, the same deadline to make your payment for housing once you set up the RSG for your you and your friend, your friends got a clog in and confirm the RSG. That's how you make it official, and so that's kind of like a social media request. If I'm going to request somebody to be my friend on social media, they've also gotta say yes, I can't just make them my friend.
A little weird, so they've gotta say yes. Just like in our SG, they've gotta say yes, I want to be in this RSG with you. And if the two of you say yes, then you're Golden. Anuar matched up together. You'll get the same random ice time, and you can either go in and pick together, or one of you can pick-n-pull the other one in.
Austin Flores
09:17:02 AM
Have you found a roommate yet? If not, no biggie. Maybe you will find them in our official Class of 2025 Facebook Group. Check it out and connect with others coming to BGSU this fall. https://www.facebook.com/groups/709540823186497
It's important caveat I want to make sure that remind folks up, though we don't guarantee roommates at BGSU, but we do guarantee if you make a room selection group by June 1st, you're both going to get the random room selection date and time. And that's because sometimes it's when it comes to actual selection day. If you can't find a double room, or more importantly, if you can't find a double room that both of you like. And sometimes that's more of the interesting thing. For some roommate pairs, that's where that gets challenging for folks, so our guarantee is if you form a room selection group, you're going to get the same randomized selection time.
It makes it much easier for the two need to live together.
Daniel Vetter
09:17:41 AM
Can we room with people majoring in ofher areas?
Brittany Cross
09:17:51 AM
Hi Daniel - yes, you can!
You also don't have to do this like I talked about before. This is an optional step, it's not required about 40% of our students go in and do a random roommate, so I random roommate simply as I go in and I pick a room that's empty and then someone else picks that same room. We're now random roommates or I go in and see that uh, rooms got one person living in it already, and there's another bed space there. I picked that same room. We're now random roommates. About 40% of people go this route. This can still be just as good of a route.
Emily Piekenbrock
09:18:12 AM
How many people can be in one RSG?
Callie Inkrott
09:18:14 AM
You can meet a roommate through our housing application, or another great place to meet them is on our class Facebook page. You don't even have to be committed to join! https://www.facebook.com/groups/709540823186497
Brittany Cross
09:18:26 AM
Hi Emily - just two! So you and one other person :)
Daniel Vetter
09:18:31 AM
Thanks Brittany!
As going in with an intentional roommate, my roommate was random when in my first year of college and he ended up being one of the groomsmen in my wedding. Mean nothing about each other. He was night and day different from me, but we ended up actually become the best of friends, and so sometimes you can get some really special relationships that really only happen in the living on campus. Experience with moments like this. So something for you to keep in mind.
Now, if you do want to try to find somebody who might be who somebody who you think is compatible with you, 'cause you've got shared mutual interests, or similar bedtimes, you can do a couple of different things. You can go through the BGSU class of 2025 Facebook group and work to meet up with someone. There may be posts that you know what I'm really all on. The Star Wars train. It wasn't the latest season of the Mandalorian, just the best thing ever. Who agrees with me and that's your criteria for a roommate. I probably would go that route through perfectly honest I can do with other things I can deal with other things, but someone's gotta like Star Wars.
Austin Flores
09:19:21 AM
If you are interested in potentially living with others who have the same major/interests, check out learning and themed communities. We actually have a session on them on Monday: https://admissions.bgsu.edu/register/vpd_lc
The other option though, is you can also look at the housing application. Maybe it's more important to know does somebody also go to bed at the same time that I do, or do they like to fall asleep to music or not fall asleep to music? Those are some things that you'd be able to find by looking through and searching the housing application for some potential roommates that might be compatible with based on how both of you answer a questionnaire that you're going to have in the housing application about what your normal living style is like.
Joshua Shumpert
09:20:01 AM
Can you change roomates after every year?
So that was room selection groups. Now I'm going to move on to joining a learning community, which is another optional step, but it's a really great one, so learning communities are essentially what they are. They are blocks of rooms that people live together in the same block of rooms and are all engaged in the same personal or professional slash academic interests. So business districts are really easy one, but I like to use. So let's say you're in business district because you want to be a business major. That's your focus, which is what I started out when I.
Jenna Ulrich
09:20:08 AM
When do we pay for parking passes?
Brittany Cross
09:20:12 AM
Joshua - yes, you can!
Callie Inkrott
09:20:23 AM
Hey Jenna! Parking passes are available this summer through your MyBGSU account!
Went undergrad you could be on the same floor as a bunch of other business students taking courses together. And So what that does is it's a smoother transition into the University because you've got people that are with you. They have the similar interests, and they're also asking some of the same questions you're asking when it comes to how do I do this assignment or understand this particular concept? And maybe it's not academics. Maybe as you want to be in the Arts Village because you have a passion and a dedication to art, or you're really interested in music, which is where our music community comes in.
Jeff Hazy
09:20:55 AM
Is it possible to get a single room even if you don't have a particular medical reason?
Or you really are interested in forensic science program here at BGSU. Whatever that interest is, we've got a lot of different learning communities that might be able to meet that interest our students in learning communities earn even higher grades than this. Other than the rest of the students living on campus, they graduated even higher rates than the rest of us. Students living on campus. And so, like I said before, we require people to live on campus because we know they perform better and graduate at higher rates. People on learning communities do that even more so. They also get to participate.
In different unique activities and trips. And it's a creative, great way to be able to just really connect with your chosen field or interest in a way that can sometimes take longer for students who are not in the learning community.
Paetyn Frederick
09:21:17 AM
Are you able to change your room/roommate throughout the year if you feel you are paired with somebody you are not compatible with?
Rebecca Lyons
09:21:32 AM
Jeff-there are singles for non-medical reasons, but not many. Most of our students live in a double.
Anna Martin
09:21:32 AM
Do you recommend freshmen taking a car the first year?
Learning communities are in a variety of different halls. We have them in founders, Coal Crusher, McDonald and and often power. And you can do. You can actually participate in go into a learning community and actually select your room early, which is one of the biggest pieces of being in a learning community is everybody who does a learning community actually selects their room first multiple weeks before we even actually do standard room selection. So if you apply for a learning community by May 12th and then get accepted.
You get to participate in an earlier form of learning community selection. If you want to know the list of all the learning communities. 'cause I'm only named a couple of them, but there are so many more you can go to bgsu.edu/communities and you'll get more information on what that looks like.
Brittany Cross
09:22:09 AM
Hi Paetyn, you can definitely swap if it isn't working out. We recommending chatting with your hall staff and roommate to see if you can work it out, but we do have a room change process that opens about 2 weeks into the semester where students are free to move to different rooms or buildings as available :)
One quick thing I want to talk about with LCS and with our SG's if you're in a learning community or you applied for a learning community, that is the only way to guarantee what building you live in. Like I said before, your housing selection date and time is randomized so it could be up to any you could be looking at living in any of our residence halls on campus for new and transfer students. However, if you decide to do a learning community, you actually would select before selection, you would be locked in. You wouldn't participate in the standard selection anymore and you would guarantee exactly where you're going to live.
Katelynn Pyles
09:22:39 AM
Can you have a roommate that is a year under you? Like as a sophomore can you room with a freshman?
Austin Flores
09:22:43 AM
Hey Anna- There are many ways to get around on campus and in town. We have shuttles with stops all over, you could bring a bike, or you can... walk :). A car is not necessary unless you are responsible for getting yourself home over breaks. Up to you, but it is an option for all students.
Brandi Barhite
09:22:47 AM
Here are all the choices for learning communities - https://www.bgsu.edu/learning-and-theme-communities.html; join us later this weekend in a session just about learning communities - https://admissions.bgsu.edu/register/vpd_lc
Because learning communities live in very specific places, so that's a really exciting thing to think about. Again, for room selection groups. Like I said, this is an optional step, but you want to make sure that the reflection group is done before you go into the selection process. So if you're going to be in a going learning community, you need to format our SG by May 18th. If you're going to be in substandard selection, which most students will do, you need to make sure that you are in that RSG by June 1st. So that way you and your friend get the same selection time, which, again.
Rebecca Lyons
09:23:10 AM
Katelynn-yes you can room with someone who is an upperclassman, but you need to contact our office at reslife@bgsu.edu.
Corrine Johnston
09:23:30 AM
Can you join a learning community after room selection if you do not get the hall you originally want during june 2?
Alright, we're coming up to the end folks, and so homes have been really good right now. Maybe I'll bring him up to say hi in a second, but this is a really great slide to be able to screenshot or take a picture of. These are some important dates that we've got coming up. So as of now you can go into the housing and meal plan application on my BGSU and make your $200 initial housing payment. To make the commitment to BGSU that you're coming on, May 1st is the last deadline is the deadline to get a refund of that $200 payment. So let's say.
Kayleigh Dearth
09:23:47 AM
are there certain things we cannot bring into our dorms?
Your plans change. Something happens. You've chosen a different institution. Or for example, you're within the commuting radius, and you've decided you're going to commute from home instead. Then that May 1st is your last day to get a refund at the $200 initial payment. Now you still have until June 1 to make that commitment to BGSU though, so you still need more time. You can do that up until June 1, then on June, and you can still make your commitment afterwards. But June 1st is key because if you make your payment by June 1st, that's what gets you your selection time on June 2nd.

So you can select that following week which will be on June 7th through the 10th. If you have any questions on anything I told you bout as well, you can always contact our office. Our number is posted here. You can also email us at reslife at bgsu.edu, especially as we get closer to selection. I really recommend following us on Facebook and Instagram or at BGSU Rez Life and we will post regular updates that are live during room selection to let you know what room availability looks like in every residence. Also you can target and think about where you want to live. Selection happens so.

can you live with someone in a different class (sophomore)?
Without further ado, I am going to take a much needed drink of water because I have been talking a lot.
And I am thirsty, and while I do that, I'm going to bring Brandy Bar Hyde back up so that way she can start to lead us in a live Q&A with some of the questions that you've been putting in the chat. So Brandy, feel free to come on back.

Can I do an RSG with someone who isn't coming until a year later? or do I have to do it the year they attend?
Rebecca Lyons
09:25:13 AM
Devin-yes you can! Both you and the student in a different class, but need to contact our office at reslife@bgsu.edu.
Brittany Cross
09:25:23 AM
Hi Katelynn, the RSG is for the current year only. You would create a new RSG every year!
I'm bad and you deserve that drink. Josh, thank you for all that great information. We started to get a lot of questions towards the end in a few of them I think. Might be worth explaining for for the whole group here. There's a lot of questions about learning communities, so one thing that I put in the chat and I'll repost it is later this weekend as part of our virtual Presidents Day series. There is a session just about learning communities where you can talk to the directores of these learning communities.
Brandi Barhite

Learning community session - https://admissions.bgsu.edu/register/vpd_lc
And get individual details about what is involved to be apart of each of those. So that might be a really great recommendation, or some of you who are asking some of those super specific questions. In fact, I am going to drop that in the chat one more time. Right now I mean not just because I think that that would help clarify some of what's being asked, but just hoping that maybe you can talk a little more about the RSG's.
Angelina DiCillo
09:26:12 AM
If we use the housing application can we contact the other person to get to know them more?
Just how many people can be in those cat? Do they have to be an underclassmen or a freshman? Can they be someone who is a sophomore like? What are some of those more details about that process?
Yeah, absolutely. So for an RSG, it's you and one other person. So that's the cap. So it's me and my friend. And that's the cap on our SG process. And that's that's universal across both new students and returning students. So the process we have for a second year students is the same that we have for first year students. And so I can bring one other person. That does mean that if I'm looking at a suite in, let's say, Founders, because I am going to be in the honors learning Community, I need to know that I'm only going to be able to bring in one other person now. We might be able to coordinate with other friends who have similar times.
Brittany Cross
09:26:55 AM
Angelina - Yes! The email address will be provided :) Sometimes students list their social media handles in their bios, so you might be able to see that, too. I'd recommend sending them an email and connecting if you don't see anything else!
To see if we can pick the same sweet, but I can't pull in every can't fill suite with people I can only bring in one other person in my RSG in terms of new and returning students living together that is happens in a couple of places on campus. But we typically ask folks to do is to email our office if that's an interest that they have with the name of themselves and the name and ID number of the person that they want to live with and what exactly that they're looking for to see if that's something that's possible because we don't have a lot of those requests.
But we do have some of them, and there are some areas on campus where both new and returning students live where we're able to make that happen. That does get more complicated if we're looking at learning communities. Some learning communities don't allow you to pull in a roommate. If I'm not part of the learning community, so or some learning communities are only really focusing on 1st year students, so that is something you want to think about. The learning community is going into it, but if we're getting to that level of questions, that's very easily just engage with our office. Give us a call or email us. We will happily talk through what you're looking for.
And give you the best advice on how to proceed.
Yeah, there was a fun question in the chat that I think would be good for everyone to hear. Can we drop the packing list into the chat if one of the moderators can? But can you? Josh maybe share a few things not to brain.

Rachael Jackson
09:28:26 AM
How do prices for housing differ depending on where it’s at?
Yes, my favorite is Ninja Stars don't bring those. Those are not allowed along with a wide variety of other weapons. Airsoft rifles, all those fun things leave them at home, they don't. They're not supposed to be here, so you'll want to make sure that you check online 'cause we have a pretty thorough list. You can't bring candles. You can't bring things with exposed heating elements, so you want to make sure that you're keeping an eye on not bringing those kinds of things to campus. Extension cords or another one. They seem really innocent, but if used.
Brandi Barhite
09:29:06 AM
Keep those questions coming!
Rebecca Lyons
09:29:09 AM
Rachael-we have tiered pricing, so the building you select dictates your cost. We have three different tiers.
Or they can create significant fire hazards, and so there's some pretty scary stories about residence. Hall fires can look like, so we take fire safety pretty seriously here. If we do see those items in, we will ask you to remove them. We also do inspections of rooms once or twice a semester to confirm that there aren't any fire or safety violations that are going on in the halls. We also do not allow pets, and so you know if I was going to call today, Homes would have to stay at home and so I would not be able to bring him as well. You can, however, have a fish.
In a fish tank and on our packing list, if that's been posted in the chat, we actually include with the size of the aquarium tank can be just. Please make sure you bring your fish home because I have I've been in this career for long enough on multiple campuses where I have seen where an innocent fish gets left behind when the break comes and there is nothing more heartbreaking. So if you're going to bring that fish, make sure that the two of you are in it together.

what about things like referigeraters and microwaves
I love that. That's great and maybe a little bit about when students should start thinking about moving in and packing. So it's only February. Alot of moving information is not going to come out to the summer, so maybe elaborate a little bit about when to expect that so they don't get too nervous right now.
No, absolutely you know. I think one of the biggest things that I think is really important is your packing list. You can start to think of some of the things you're going to be packing, but one of the things on my best piece of advice is don't form the full detailed packing list until after you've selected your room, because if you think about it, once I've selected my room, I'm going to know who I'm living with, whether that's the person that we hoped I hoped I was going to live with, or my random roommate. But in either case, I will know 100% who I'm living with and once it's signed, sealed, delivered after room selection.
Rebecca Lyons
09:30:27 AM
Matt-you can bring a mini-fridge and microwave as long it is is below our listed cubic feet.
That's where we can have really important questions. Does one of us want to bring the TV or should somebody else bring this item or this item? Because a lot of people like to coordinate and figure that kind of stuff out. That's really hard to do if you're almost too far ahead in your planning process, but one of the things that we will be doing our move in process and the information on that, including dates, what to expect by you know how to know when you're supposed to come to campus. All that stuff will be coming in, but like in the lead up to selection, and especially right when selections, then 'cause we know the next thing people are asking.
After they pick their room is so when am I moving in? And if you think about it, you're picking your room in June. You're going to be moving in two months later. That's actually not a lot of time, so we will be coming right up right up behind that with all the information you could possibly want.
And Speaking of making those connections and talking with your roommate, there were a few questions about the housing application and finding roommates. So once people start forming groups or like looking for roommate, are they communicating in the housing application or are they communicating elsewhere?
That's a really great question. So um, when you find someone you actually have the ability to send them a message. And what that does is you can send a message through the housing portal that will go to their BGSU email address. So if I pull up Brandy anseo, Brandy, it sounds like the roommate.
For me we both like to go to bed at the same time and we both don't like music on when we're going to sleep. I think would be great roommates together. If that happens, I can send a message to Brandy and say, hey, this sounds like we've got a lot of same interests. Here's some of the things I like or I'm interested in. Would you be interested in being a roommate with me? That goes to brandys BGSU email account. And then what happens is Brandy can then choose to respond to that and we want to make sure that she responds to the students email address, not the Office of Residence Life 'cause the original email comes from Rez Life. So you want to make sure.
You respond to the student, but that's really the crux of where that communication begins. So it's really going to be important that you keep checking your BGSU email address because your BGSU email address is your main link to how your housing process is going. To continue to unfold over the course of the next few months. And so now if you're in our SG and you've already got everything locked, it may not be a serious for you to have to check over and over, but somebody might be messaging you and saying, hey, I think we could be good roommates and you don't want to necessarily miss out on that. So if something makes you good to keep in mind.
That you're checking on a regular basis.

What are the chance of living in a six person dorm but only having you and another person?
Emily Atkinson
09:33:24 AM
Good morning, I was wondering where the pricing list is located for the on-campus housing?
So we have a question Valley and I'm going to ask her to elaborate in the chat because I'm not quite sure I know how to answer this. It says what are the chances of living in a six person dorm, but only having you and another person. So I'm wondering Ali are you wondering what happens if you don't know who order room with? Or are you asking about BG issues policy right now? As far as having multiple people in the room because of covid, so I'm going to have Josh just start maybe talking about.
Roommates and covid and how we plan to operate. They will elaborate on her question and we can get that answered for.
Awesome, I can definitely start an alley and keeping an eye on the questions coming in, so I'll catch it when you come in. So what we're doing? We are planning to reopen and come. We are planning to go back to full occupancy in the fall semester for 2021, and so President Rogers actually last week, so not not yesterday, but this but the Friday before that actually sent an email to the campus community, helping to reiterate and kind of set the direction for where we're going. Both that we plan to offer a robust face to face.

Instruction in terms of classes and that we're moving into full double occupancy in our residence halls. That means that if you were looking at a six person suite and you and a friend pick in there, I would be. There's a very high chance that those other four beds in that suite are likely going to be filled by other people that you don't know yet, and so which is where some of that living on campus experience begins where you start to meet new people and you start to learn how to interact with people in the best way possible. If you ever have any questions on how to have this conversation, that's what our office is here to help with.
We can help coaching with how to have those conversations and nudge you in the right direction of how to make the most of your living environment, which is a standard experience that everybody goes through. 'cause part of the living on campus experience is meeting new people and getting to forge those new relationships and learning how to get to know other people in a way that you did before?
So, um, to elaborate a little bit on that, Josh, can you talk about the fact issue has been open? We have had students living on campus all fallen all spring and the I just think that that's good for people to know. And that's actually why we can't give in person tours of the residence Hall right now and maybe talk about your plans for the summer, which I think will.
Possibly exciting for this group.
Ally Stroll
09:35:37 AM
If you live in a suite style dorm that can fit, say 6 people, but only 2 people get that room, is that possible? Whether you and a person pick that room together or not.
Yeah, so actually before I dive into that I just saw alleys. Question come in, I wouldn't catch that really quick if that's cool. So Alice to Alice saying right now if you live in a suite style residence Hall that fits six people in a suite, but only two people get that room, is that possible? I think that just left my other tabs need to catch up. Whether you are a person, pick that room together or not. So essentially what would happen in a six person suite is, you know, let's say we go. Actually, I'm going to use a diagram.
Because diagrams are helpful for people who want to see it, so let's look at 'cause it sounds like we're talking about Founders here specifically. So if we're looking at this again, this is for people interested in the honors learning community or all gender housing only.
Katelynn Pyles
09:36:10 AM
How does the housing payment work after the initial $200 housing payment?
But let's look at see if we have a suite style layout. If two of you are picking one of the double double room on the left, then those other two rooms, which are also double rooms. This could be picked by anybody else. Just because you've picked one of those rooms doesn't mean those other two rooms can't be picked. They can be picked by any other person as well, and so 'cause you're picking for a room you're not picking and blocking an entire suite, so you can only pick within a specific room itself.
And you can't control who's in the other rooms, basically which I think.
That is true and they cannot control who's in the other rooms either, so no one has control over that. You can only really pick a room and pull someone in if you pick a room by yourself, you don't get and you don't pull someone in. Someone else does have the ability and the right to pick that other bed space as well, which means you've chosen to go the random roommate route.
Rebecca Lyons
09:37:11 AM
Katelynn-When your bill is posted, your housing cost will be listed, but minus the $200 initial payment. For example, if your housing was $3000 for the semester, you would see the charge of $2800 for the room.
Yeah, perfect, that's a great question. Other people have asked that too. 'cause you can only pull one other person in with you, so you'll be guaranteed that person that you know or have made a connection with. So yeah, the residence halls have been occupied this fall and spring. And when can our students look forward to a possible tour before they move in?
Emma Wenzlick
09:37:38 AM
Hey! I got here late. Sorry
Yeah, absolutely. So we are, you know, like Randy said, we are currently we're currently open. We have people living on campus right now as I'm talking so and we have been doing that in a covid responsible manner. Our students have been really great in terms of working with and really practicing those protocols and being good stewards of the Community. We don't have tours obviously right now because we're trying to make sure that we, you know, as we're still working through the pandemic, we're definitely getting to the point where we see light at the end of the tunnel.
But we also don't want to press our luck before we're ready to really be able to open to open the floodgates even more so. Our hope is that the tourists will be able to happen in the summer as part of sore. So currently what we're planning to do is when people start coming in and doing in person so that we're going to be able to offer times for people to actually get a tour of the residence halls to see a little bit more about what it's going to be about.

09:39:26 AM
Thank you, Rebecca! do you pay it all together, or do you make small payments?
Absolutely. So you make your $200 payment for the first part of your housing, then the rest of your house and gets put on your housing account and that will go on at the end of July. So that's where the housing. That's where the summer bills will get posted for BGSU overall and so if you think about that, that's going to be your housing your meal plan, your tuition and fees, etc. Though all common, they'll be built there. So at that point the Office of the Bursts are will communicate to you that you now have your new.

very helpful thank you for posting sessions
Your new fees have been done and based on what your financial aid looks like, yeah. So your room, tuition, boarding fees, and meal plan all minus your financial aid will equal what you have left to pay. So if your financial aid is enough, that will cover that piece. If there is additional additional payments that happen after that, you'll then you will know that as you are doing your as that gets posted on your account and then you make that payment. Sorry, I don't know why I'm having trouble forming basic sentences. It's one of those things that's a lot of different steps is not just residence life as part of that.
Process so for housing it will come as part of everything else that gets posted on your bill at the end of July.
Rachael Jackson
09:40:31 AM
So how do meal plans work with allergies?
Yeah, in Kelly, just in the chat, the prices for last year so they can do a cost comparison. And it looked like one student have asked about. Do you have to pay it all at one time so our billing is per semester so you would pay for fall 2021 and then the next time you would pay is spring 2022. Now if you don't want to pay for faulty 21 on the due date of August 1st of 2021, I had to think about that in my head all these 2020 ones and all these dates then you can do a payment plan.
Rebecca Lyons
09:41:18 AM
Rachael-Dining has a registered dietician that you can work with if you have allergies. She is great!
So you can break up your payment for fall 2021 semester into four payment plans and just keep in mind that something you wanted to attend this weekend too is our financial aid session. I'll have one of the moderators drop that into the chat so you can ask more specifics about your financial aid, what it covers, when the bill is due, but you're not even going to get a bill for fall 2021 until around July 1st, and then that'll be due in August.

Don't absolutely, so you can learn more about meal plans first. If you're looking at what meal fun stuff like in general at nyu.bgsudining.com/residence, that will let you know what our first year dining plans look like. All first year students I have what's called a custom meal plan. So that means it's a combination of meal swipes and what are called Falcon dollars. The meal swipes are used at places such as Caroline Place and The Oaks on campus, which are all you can eat. Dining centers where you swipe to enter and then.
I'm not quite. It's a buffet style. All you can eat within that facility until you leave. You do actually have to leave them. You cook dinner, then the Falcon dollars are specifically is like a declining balance on the card. So essentially you can use that at any of our marketplaces within our different residence halls, such as in pressure or in Founders or and often how are as well as other dining areas like the sundial and which is located in pressure and then also the.
Rebecca Lyons
09:43:16 AM
Kayleigh-It depends on where you live! The most that you would be sharing a traditional community bathroom with would be 30. But remember, there are several shower stalls, sinks, and toilets. Also, everyone is on different schedules, so not everyone is using them at the same time.
Food court that's located within the student union, so you can use those. Essentially, you know if something costs, you know $7.00. You can pay for that $7.00 using your student ID using those Falcon dollars. So that's what the meal plans look like there in terms of working with allergies or dietary needs. We also have a campus dietitian named Paige Wagner who L is able to help really work with you specifically on any dietary needs that you have. So you go to Dining's website. You'll be able to actually get the contact information to be able to work with the campus dietitian.
And any needs that you have and get some of those questions answered.
Rated in the way so that it will opt into the chat that link to join dining services for a session just about that. 4:00 PM on Sunday. So remember it's like a full weekend just for you, so there's a lot of different opportunities to continue to connect with us. So Josh, we're getting some really good questions about Covid Ann required vaccinations, so I'm going to let justice how Covid is being handled in the residence halls. I do also want to share that.

Yeah, absolutely. I think one of the things I would lead with as well because I think it's really important is that not not yet requiring the lack of a requirement of kovid vaccine is not unique to BGSU either. That is very much many. There are a large number of institutions. I would probably say the overwhelming majority are not requiring the vaccination at the moment because it hasn't 'cause the vaccinations that do exist today have been given emergency approval, but I still have to continue through the full approval through the FDA as well and so.
Brittany Cross
09:45:27 AM
Emma, yes, service dogs are permitted. You would work with Accessibility Services in order to get your service animal approved. Here's a link to the Accessibility Services site https://www.bgsu.edu/accessibility-services.html
There are reasons why the majority of higher education as a field has not even gone that direction, so it's not just a BGSU decision, which I think is really, we just use not just unique in that is what I'm trying to say is I think that's really important to know and so that I think I think that helps answer the vaccination question. Peace, what we've done in terms of Covette 19 is we've really worked to make sure to really prioritize all of the safety recommendations that have been given to us by the Centers for Disease Control and the Ohio Department of Health.
Emma Wenzlick
09:45:47 AM
THANK YOU AUSTIN!
That obviously involves mask mandates on campus when you're not in your own personal room. You need to wear a mask maintaining social distancing and making sure that we keep the appropriate capacity of people in different common areas, etc. So we've really worked hard to try to make sure that we're doing that. We've also gone. I what I think is above and beyond personally, in a process I'm pretty proud of for our office of how we really work with students who do test positive for COVID-19 or get exposed to somebody who has had the virus and over the course of the last.
Emma Wenzlick
09:46:23 AM
Would a motorized wheelchair or scooter be allowed?
Over the course of this academic year, we have delivered meals to students. We have secured a separate housing outside the residence halls for students who have tested positive. We have done everything really to the furthest extent to make sure that whenever anybody finds themselves in what is a really challenging position that we give them as much support as we can to make sure that they can get through this in the best way possible and still continue to be a successful student while also making sure that the community at large is also still being safe. Does that answer your question?
Brittany Cross
09:47:00 AM
Emma, yes :) I would reach out to accessibility services, which I linked above. They can work with you to make sure everything meets your needs.
Yeah, I thought I knew Josh recently. BGSU did a text survey to current students to say if you were given the option to be vaccinated for covid would you? The vast majority of students said they were interested in that. So I do think BG issues student body as a whole is very committed to, you know covid safety be in each other healthy and so that has been really really.
Impress of the other thing too, because I mentioned our Chief Health Officer, BG is hired a person to manage covid in the pandemic. That's his full time job. He is always running clinics on campus and you can get a free covid at anytime. In fact, before 7:00 AM.
Winter break he sent home a covid at home Test to every single student to take, so I mean, it's a very sophisticated and robust plan and I know I put this in the chat a few times, but it might be worth one more time. Our president me at 4:00 PM is going to address students and families and talk about covid talk about his hope for the fall. It would be really great if you are free to attend that to hear his thoughts and how he's moving. BG issue.

Forward because we know that the residential experience having that ultimate University experience what our students want, and that's what we've been striving to give during the pandemic and plan to continue to do that for fall 2021. So Josh, I know that some families are probably attending level name session, so I think we're going to have to wrap up and less I see anything I don't see more. So this was an amazing crowd. We roll 100 at one point, 86 people have still hung on with us for all of these amazing.
